Who would name their kid Haggai?

Haggai is associated with the perpetual human story of starting over. Since Haggai's time some 2500 years ago hundreds of millions of people have had to start over in life. Changes are that you have had to start over one are more times. I have had at least six major restarts in my life time. Each time it has been worrisome and stressful and a sense of satisfaction that you have survived the transition.
This story is wrapped up in in a very ancient setting and told in the way men perceived their life in those days but there are still lessons to be learned.
Lesson one is you need to get together; no man or family is an island unto themselves.
You need togetherness to share inspiration and to collect knowledge.
In starting over my wife and I would find a house, a school and a church right away, this to back up the new job and to quickly began to feel a sense of belonging to something bigger than ourselves.
In early America the first building to be built was usually the church which also served as a school. Then there was dinner on the ground, where all kinds of useful information was shared. This same building would be used if there was a threat to the community of some kind and again used if someone had a vision for improvement of the larger community.

    The Reason Why.

Trudging back to Jerusalem after many years of serving as slaves in Babylon was a hard and depressing experience. It's hard to know how many died on the journey and even though being servants in Babylon was not desirable it did have some pluses.
Many worked in the homes of the rich and got to eat better food than they were able to provide for themselves after returning to Jerusalem.
Others worked in the well tended fields around the city and still others learned how to care for and raise animals. When we open Haggai the people had been back less than two years and had been so busy trying to make a house and grow crops in order to survive that they had not got around to really communicating with each other and comparing notes. Thus the need to have a " common house " a place that serves many common needs.
