House of Cards # 3

Posted 05-22-2014 at 01:55 PM by Fortoggie

By now I have watched 14 episodes of House of Cards. There has been intrigue, lust, sex and murder just like a James Bond movie. In fact I tried to weigh in House of Cards in comparison, with the cowboy movies that I have watched. Looking back I realize that the west was never even close to what Hollywood showed us. Then I compared House of Cards to the modern police movies that we see; the car chases, the shooting the blood etc.,the sinning by the police as much as by the bad guys. The movie people start with just enough reality to stimulate their imaginations, add in a little weed and some cocaine and you have a modern hit show.
We just have to accept that the movie industry takes little bits of truth and exaggerates them to a high level; that is the whole nature of acting and entertaining, weeping, yelling, fist fighting and drinking and smoking to access. When you are not bound by truth, you can take the story anywhere you think the audience will follow;to provide them a vicarious experience.
The trouble is with House of Cards there is a strong compulsion to want to believe that it is true. It seems to me that modern cameras are so good and the directors and actors have perfected their skills to such a high level that many people can not separate truth from fiction.
This makes it very hard for our leaders to lead and to maintain a level of trust. Lack of trust and to always have to deal with millions being suspicious of what you are doing is debilitating to say the least.
To add to the irony is the possibility that House of Cards will make more money than the payroll of all the people who work in the white house. This situation applies to whatever administration that is in office. There is always those who make big money over giving our leaders a hard time.

    An inconvenient truth emerges!

In episode 15 Frank is talking privately about his home state of S.C., when he says; " People think that Peaches are our top crop in S.C. but really it's tobacco but peaches look better on our state promotions. In fact our third top crop is marihuana and that we don't talk about at all."
In this case the congressman has not caused this reality at all; he is only accepting the facts.
I have seen it many times when I have helped people get elected to office; they invariably get a rude awaking when they come face to face with what's really going on.
For instance I once worked hard as a printer/publisher to help a man get elected as sheriff. Two years later a large gathering of people began to assemble at a local farm. Some people asked the sheriff to check it out as most had out of state tags.
It turned out that a large number of wife swappers had planned a three day orgy. Since this was completely against community values, the sheriff had the county DA and others see what he could do to shut down the affair.
Actually there was no law against this kind of thing if people were on private property. The sheriff kept undercover people in positions around the farm to contain this unusual behavior and to keep certain hot heads from going in with guns.
Politicians do not cause all the trouble and often do not have the power to rectify it.
