Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

KOKE-FM Making Changes Once Again

Posted 04-19-2014 at 06:49 AM by case44

Just when you thought KOKE-FM was still getting more established, well, now they've decided to make another change. Within the bounds of Genuine Austin Radio, the honchos have determined that it'd be okay to part with one of their three FM frequencies.

They already have 99.3, which reaches a substantial tract of Central Texas landscape, along with 98.5, which reaches those places that 99.3 can't. So, they're parting with the 105.3 FM channel and changing the format to a rock format with a playlist not offered by the corporatists who set too many limits for listeners. The other surprise is that KOKE is gaining an AM outlet in Austin, and it's 1490. Yeah, that's been the home of The Word, which, I thought, was great for Austin with a Christian teaching and talk format. Not sure yet, though, whether that frequency will obtain KOKE's actual call letters, since, believe it or not, KOKE-AM actually does exist on Pflugerville-licensed 1600, and with a Spanish format. What eventually will happen to The Word's format in Austin is anybody's guess.

One of the shows on the new 105.3 will be "J.B. & Sandy", which has already gained popularity in Austin. They made a visit to Barbecue Bob Cole's morning show on KOKE yesterday to promote the new venture. As I could say, "Stay tuned...." Things are just getting more interesting as Austin defies corporate radio's command in its quest to keep radio the way it should be: ... local.

By the way, the new 105.3 FM in Austin is going to be called The Fringe. It will program rock music with the well-knowns and the rarities.

Update: 1490 The Word's programming will be moved to 1260 KWNX, replacing a sports-formatted FM simulcast.
