Finding Peace Amid the Clouds

Posted 07-13-2008 at 07:07 PM by JoshB

I remember a few months ago I went flying for the first time ever. It all started when I thought about seeing the land I grew up around for the last 19 years. I thought to myself how can I grow some appreciation for my area? Well then I thought about flying and how I wanted to say that I've flown before.

So I called the local municipal airport one day and spoke with the head honcho. He gave me a guys phone number who loves to fly! I mean this guy has a passion beyond describing. So I called this guy up and spoke with him. He was asking me what my aspirations of flying were? I told him that I wanted to see everything from the sky. We scheduled a day when the weather was permissable. We were delayed by three weeks of snow etc.

My clear sunny day finally came. I sat at the airport waiting for about 30 minutes. I was a little nervous etc. Finally I see this cessna break the horizon and Tim came in the runway and turned around and met me at the hanger. We exchanged some information etc.

Finally I'm in the airplane listening to the rumble of that motor and the peace of the propeller spinning. We started slowly and finally lifted off ground. I was flying!

So about a minute or two goes by and my stomach feels just fine now. I'm comfortable and we are at around 3500' elevation. We were still gaining altituide. We finally hit 7300-7500' and the views of the area were amazing. I've never had much appreciation for the town I grew up in. The state seemed boring. That all changed. I found peace amid the clouds. I felt like I was in a different world. The countryside looked so beautiful. I was stunned. I thought man if only everyone had the opportunity to fly in a cessna.

The original contract was $30.00 for an hour fly. Well we flew 2.5 hours for $30.00. lol Tim and I had were just naming off landmarks etc. I could see lake Michigan 90 miles away. Everything was peaceful.

At the end Tim asked me if I would like to take flying lessons. I told him someday. I'm the only one in my family to ever fly in a cessna. I felt superior. lol

So when I need to find peace, I always know I can find it amid the clouds.

ahhh..... Flying, try it someday it is very rewarding and it gives you more appreciation of beauty of where you live.

You are such a great writer!!!

I have a relative that lives in Wisconsin that is a writer, you wouldn't happen to be related to a female writer would you?

You may not even be interested but if you are you should really contact a local newspaper and check into sharing your gift for writing with more people. You could have a little small column where you could write your stories, the people could read them each week and be taken away to your world just like we are. It's just a thought but I'm sure that everybody that has been reading your blog would agree. I'm sure that with your talent you could write a book easily. Good Luck to you! I hope that you keep us updated with your journey and keep on writing your stories, I look forward to reading them!!!
