Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Geckos, Fire Drills, And Former Co-Workers Make Up An Eventful Day

Posted 03-18-2014 at 08:00 PM by case44

You probably couldn't have written a crazier script than some of the things that happened to me today. I'm not saying that this was a bad day by any stretch, not in the least. Just some things that were heartwarming and things that were funny, along with a potential Target curfuffle that was waiting to happen.

At work today, things went well. On two occasions, I'd gotten to hear from two of my former co-workers, one by instant message, and the other by phone. Just a variety of reasons between the two for their calls, but nonetheless, I was the first employee to receive those calls today. Looks like I was in the right place at the right time. It was good to hear from them, and right when it wasn't real busy at work, either. That made for an even better experience.

Late in the shift, our entire building (numbering a few hundred employees) had an unexpected fire drill that we just had to do. So we did. I walked out the emergency exit and waited for my group to gather near the flagpole. The drill was relatively short, maybe seven minutes, tops. By the time we were given the green light to re-enter the building, one of my fellow employees from another department pointed something out to me. I looked below and, lo and behold, upon my right pant leg in living color was none other than............a live gecko! That's right, a little reptilian gecko. He was crawling up and clinging to my pant leg. Surprised beyond belief, I shooed him off of me and that little rascal dang near landed on another co-worker! This was one story that was worth a picture, and it's too bad nobody had a camera where I was. Out of all the fire drills I've experienced through the years at work, that was certainly one of the more memorable ones.

After work, I had to go to Target to buy a battery for my bedroom clock. As I waited in what I thought would be the quickest line in the store, there were two people in front of me being served and one impatient lady behind me. She was impatient because, in her eyes, the cashier was lollygagging around with the customer. Well, she did have to reboot the scanner, but other than that, I thought she did take a little too much time with one customer, but it didn't look bad enough for me to protest. For the lady behind me, I offered to give up my spot and let her in front of me, but she declined, as her vocal disapproval of the cashier can be heard. Fortunately, one of the other cashiers came over to me and pointed me towards his counter. I was taken care of over there, and it's probably a good thing. I would have hated to have still been in that previous line and seeing what might have happened following my checkout, knowing that a confrontation of some sort between the lady behind me and the cashier might have taken place. Thankfully, I wasn't around for that. My batteries were purchased and I walked out of said Target store in one piece.

On top of all that, what I mentioned in my previous post about the hot water and the breaker switch to the water heater that didn't get flipped back where it should have been; remember that?? Oh, what a day. Every indication would not only suggest but demand that this was not an uneventful day, to say the least.

Earlier today, I just had a co-worker wonder if that gecko had found its way into my pocket. The answer, of course, is no, because I would not have noticed if I did. Not right away, anyway. I took care of that creature before such a situation would have happened.

That'd have been a good scenario to have, however. Imagine if I had reached for my car keys and ended up pulling out a gecko.....
