George Mason

George Mason lived at the same time as our founding fathers and wrote the declaration of rights for Virginia. Later Jefferson was to borrow heavily from that to write the Declaration of Independence.
One of Masons main points was;" the government is or ought to be, instituted for the common benefit, protection, and security of the people."
It's true that this grand idea has never been able to get free reign in our country. Yet I think that we should keep working at bringing it to fruition.
This concept of common benefit or common good has languished in exile. Powerful forces have worked to keep Masons idea from being widely circulated and accepted. I was a grown man and through college before I heard the phrase,"common good", it seemed like such a good concept that I wondered why I hadn't heard it before. Even now that phrase is seldom used in everyday speech and evidently is not near the top of peoples thinking process.
Then Mason mentions protection and I for one appreciate having meat and food inspectors, even those who check weights and measures help protect us from being swindled.
Of course, security we understand, that is if we are thinking about national security but how we have rebelled against the government keeping us secure when it comes to seat belts [ it took over 30 years just to get 60 % of us to buckle up ] tobacco and guns come to mine as well.
Do you think the George Mason had the right idea and do you think that we should help keep the idea alive?
