Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

A Word To High School Baseball Fans: Park Far Away

Posted 03-11-2014 at 08:20 PM by case44

Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes............you end up the victim. No, nothing happened to me tonight, but it's always interesting to see what happens when baseball and schoolboy fans attend a high school baseball game. The suspense really builds when foul balls are hit out of the ballpark and land somewhere in the parking lot.

And that's where I have to make my brief point today. One of the foul balls flew completely out of the field of play and set off someone's car alarm. Thankfully, not mine, but another fan in the stands. It's important that, whenever you go to a high school baseball game, study the area and the ballpark. Some of the parking is close enough to the area of play that, no risks barred, your vehicle is subject to a stray foul ball from the bat of a high schooler. You may end up with a broken windshield or side window, or possibly even a dent on the car's body. Such things do happen, but as I sometimes tell you, we take things for granted. We fans would rather get caught up in the play on the field, what with base hits, good base running, and big catches taking hold of our attention spans while looking at the grass green beautiful.

As I was getting parked before the game, I wondered if the space I parked in was too close. I looked and thought a moment. Then I moved my car a few feet further away. Yes, I know that there will be other cars parked on either side of mine; I just don't want my ride dinged by a long-flying foul ball. With spring about to be sprunged, we've got bigger things to worry about. Other things. Things like hail storms, lightning, and wind damage.

Then again, if a foul ball actually landed inside my lovely Toyota, I'd just keep it and take it as a souvenir. It's just the kind of thing (well, sort of) that memories are made of.

Texas Tech baseball actually has a broken windshield sound effect when foul or fly ball makes its way outside the park. There, it's probably best to go to the nearby football lot, which many people do. Tonight, a game was actually called early due to high winds. The engineering building across the street might have been a victim if not for that decision, due to the way Tech was hitting and the direction of the howling winds.

Something like that happened to a friend of mine a few years ago. The ball did not completely shatter his windshield, but he still had to replace the whole thing. $250 for a foul ball.
