Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Scattershooting / Seeing A Business Close Its Doors Before My Very Eyes

Posted 02-27-2014 at 07:35 PM by case44

While you all are somewhere busily cleaning house, watching television, or eating some chocolate cake, your favorite blogger is at it again. Time for some Scattershooting, where, if Blackie Sherrod were to come around to this blog and view the mess I've been making, he'd happily applaud....

And, so, on we go....

********

The business climate in America, for better or worse, is changing. I just ran an errand to a nearby Verizon store to pay a bill (splitting check and credit card). Money's super-tight for Ol' Case, and occasionally, I'd have to split up the bill rather than mail one check, so that means a little scurry to the nearby Verizon store. As I walked in, a sign appears in the back of the store. Said sign contained these words: Closing March 31st. Como???! Say that again?? Closing? Yes, they are. Oh, people had been going over there to pay some bills, but they haven't had enough sales to keep that location running. They don't just help people with bills; there are also telephones and cable subscription services that they deal with, as well. Oh, and there's more: A counter guy told me that all the Verizon locations would close on March 31. All of them!

Oh, well. Such is the mystery of the complexity of life.

Going forward, after March the thirty oneth, they'll be doing all business online or by telephone. By the way, as I left there ---- and this is so ironic as well as ominous ---- they literally turned out the lights and locked the doors. I was the last customer for today. Thought they closed at 7, but no, it was actually 6:30. No matter, though. It seems fitting since next month I will send in my check in full and in the mail, but if I need to split it up again in the future, then I won't be able to. Seems very symbolic and scary all at the same time.

But, as I always say, that's the way it goes.

Some goings-on in Frisco, Texas, this weekend, as middle and high school students there will be performing at the Frisco Jazz Festival. It's an annual event showcasing jazz ensembles from many of Frisco's middle and high schools, and it's simply an exhibition with two adjudicators offering constructive criticisms to help the students in polishing their performances for upcoming contests. The event takes place at Wakeland High School this Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. I'll be on hand to check out most of the proceedings.

And it's almost high school baseball time. I'm planning to go to a few games at a few of the city's diamonds in the next month or so.

It's usually no surprise that marriages in Hollywood and in the music industry just don't last, regardless of how long a couple is together. Although the following link talks about what was supposed to be a recent stage performance, the details contained within proceeded to turn diamonds into rust.

Back to baseball for a second, this time, the major league kind. The Houston Astros are readying themselves for Spring Training in Florida, and, like all the other clubs, a number of players are vying for spots on the club's Opening Day roster. A funny story from my last vacation just taken: On Wednesday of that week, I had taken an excursion from Abilene to head on down to San Angelo to visit some points of interest. Abilene had 7-mile visibility that morning at a time when fog was rampant in much of the region. On my way to San Angelo, the fog was more dense, with half-mile visibilities for much of the route. By the time I had reached the outskirts of San Angelo, all the fog had lifted, as if on cue. Needless to say, not only did God have His hand on me, He also provided great timing with events.

Like many of you, I used to watch the TV show "Cheers". Remember that old NBC series? That was classic television at its finest, with an incredible ensemble cast that just had a great chemistry and even survived a few casting changes during its run. Of course, the show now lives forever in syndication and on DVD.

What are the former cast members up to? Let us just find out....

In the four years since I've had cancer surgery to remove my thyroid, you'll be pleased to know that I've had no new cancer flare-ups anyplace else on me. Victory, if you can say that. Can I get an "Amen" from the brethren and sisteren? No new problems after numerous checkups, tests, and three nuclear pills. I'm doing pretty danged good these days.

And now, it's time for our Word Of The Day. Today's word is foot. Now, as you well know, foot takes on several meanings. Obviously, the first thing thought about is the foot being a part of your body. But there's more: In measurements, three times one foot would make a yard. Ever get mad at someone footing the bill with your taxpayer dollars? And I'd better stop writing this blog post soon before I get one foot in the bed.

And there you are.

Glad you haven't had any new cancer, Case. It's never an easy thing to go through, but it appears you hung in nicely and braved through it.
