Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Catching A View Of Small-Town America

Posted 02-25-2014 at 06:39 PM by case44

There's small, and then there's smaller. On my recent Big Country vacation, there's a place I passed on the highway that an old camp preacher once talked about when reflected on his younger years before he began his ministry. I could not resist since I was in the Abilene, Texas, area and just had to explore my world around me, so it was time to take a good look.

The preacher, who is a pastor of a church in the Dallas area and whose name I will not reveal in this space, talked about a little church in a little bitty community known as View, Texas. He shared those experiences during one of my years at a church camp as a youth. At that time, he only aroused my attention, since I wanted to learn more about my state. Fast-forward to about 30 or so years later, and my road trip was taking place. I trudged on over to briefly look at the place. Now, remember, this place is a very small community (not even a town), so brief is the operative word here. It is situated, neatly, next to a railroad track off of U.S. Highway 277, about 13 miles southwest of Abilene. The church building was a nice little place for a small Sunday gathering, complete with a bell and the accompanying tugging rope. This was reminiscent of the old country church, and in essence, you could safely say that it was. Still is. It's a quaint little municipality, this View, Texas. Alongside the community, the burg's main intersection featured a Shell gas station, and it included a convenience store/gift shop that was called ---- and I'm not making this up ---- View Mall.

See how many chuckles and yuks you can get out of that, huh?

I think I also know how the community got its name. There are hills and small mountains in the rangeland just a few miles south and southwest of View. Some of those hills have wind turbine farms, with those spinners spinning round and round. In the distance, the hills are breathtaking and add an ambience to the scene at hand. Maybe that is how View got its name. What great views you can see from the community. You know, if you really want to live in a small town, View wouldn't be such a bad place to be. Heck, Abilene is close by, and all the amenities you would imagine having are practically right there.

There's something to be appreciated by having a small community such as View, Texas. You'll understand it better if you stand near that View Baptist Church bell and hear someone ringing it.
