Are Unions Still Needed?

Posted 02-24-2014 at 11:47 AM by Fortoggie

There has never been a time in history when the powerless and the landless didn't need some kind of guild or association such as the masons to represent them. Imagine dentists not having an association or even real estate agents without an association to keep their commissions at a level that they deem necessary. Unions are necessary to help maintain a sense of dignity and fairness to the work force. A man who is working to turn out a car every two minutes, doesn't have time look out after his quality of life issues.

    More than meets the eye.

The modern union often offers services that give benefits off the job. For instance a law firm might be kept on retainer so that union members and their families could get free or low cost legal advice. In some cases this can save a mans job or even his family.
Another thing is that unions can monitor labor trends and cost of living within a whole region and help the local members understand where they stand in the larger picture.
