Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Case's Vacation Journal: How To Get Free Sausage

Posted 02-19-2014 at 04:45 PM by case44

From time to time, you've seen me write about my restaurant experiences and wait staff doing what they should be doing (or otherwise). It's one thing to get good food out the right way. It's a totally other thing when the food that is presented to you isn't what you ordered.

In continuing this latest excursion onto the roads of Texas, your prolific writer decided to trudge on down from Abilene to San Angelo, where I stopped and had taken a few pictures around the city and visited a few points of interest. As with all new visual experiences, they just go hand in hand with food and the expectations that accompany it. Since the time at hand turned to lunch, that's when Ol' Case stopped at a place he'd never been before. The place happens to be Packsaddle BBQ, and it looks like it's popular with the locals. It actually has a very good website. The subject is barbecue, and subject 1a just happens to be a waitress whom I thought would get the order right.

I know what you're saying: "Oh, Case, here you go again with the ordering thing. Get over it already. People are only human and are going to make mistakes...."

Well, folks, sometimes, the mistakes can be delicious. Chill. The world didn't end.

What did I order? For lunch, I ordered sliced beef brisket, pork ribs, potato salad, and beans. Sounds good so far. I waited about five minutes after placing that order, and there came my meal for the visit. But something was wrong, and I immediately saw it.

On the plate was potato salad, beans, brisket, and...............

.....sliced smoked sausage???

The waitress realized that and went back to correct the problem, but the big surprise was when she came back to my table. The errant sausage (which did look good, by the way) was still on the plate, but she also emerged with three pork ribs on a separate plate. Talk about exceeding one's expectations. She said I can have the sausage (if I want) for free of charge. So, I chowed down on my meal with the unexpected extra. Funny how life is. Last week, if you'll recall, I ended up with a free oil change at my local car dealership because the wait took too long. Today, my first-ever meal at any San Angelo restaurant ends up having something turn up for free, and all because the waitress messed up.

It leads back to something I explored in a previous posting: You want to know to get free food? Have your waitperson get the order wrong. You see, folks, mistakes can have blessings.

In case you're wondering, the answer's yes. I will be back at Packsaddle in San Angelo. I do recommend it to you if ever you are in that area. When I get to go back there, well, that's anyone's guess. It won't be soon, as I have other places I'd like to go to in a few months and beyond. But I would like to go again eventually. Money's tight, so traveling is halted once I get home.

Last night, you'll be interested in how my Perini Ranch dinner turned out. Everything was wonderful, and my sinuses got clearer. I had fried quail legs for the appetizer, ribeye steak for my main course, and the sides were green chile hominy (a mixture of whole hominy, bacon, and green chiles cooked up in a cheddar cheese sauce), green beans, and sourdough rolls with herbed butter. The cooks even included sliced jalapeno halves (grilled and still with the seeds). I took three bites. Hey, they're good for you.

And for dessert? Perini's own version of bread pudding (Sourdough bread with pecans and a Jack Daniels sauce). He really did good!
