Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

The Ryan Express Is Back Home Again, And Houston Couldn't Be Prouder

Posted 02-12-2014 at 07:32 PM by case44

Many of you knew this was going to happen. I did, too. We just didn't know when it was going to happen.

Fans of the Texas Rangers are probably seething right now and kicking something they can find. They're wondering, "How can they just let this happen?" Well, it's happened, and it's only for the benefit of the Houston Astros, and for a foundation that is getting more solid as the team rebuilds for the future.

Nolan Ryan is going home again.

Yes, home for the Ryan Express is not Arlington, but Houston. He had spent many years in nearby Alvin, raising his three children while he was chucking 100-mile-per-hour fastballs into the mitts of catchers in the major leagues as an intimidating pitcher. Let's not forget that he's also a respected baseball man who displays a lot of common sense. Success has always followed him everywhere he's gone, having just turned a sorry, putrid Texas Rangers franchise into a beautiful swan, with two World Series appearances in the last five years. Oh, he's a die-hard Texan, but I'll be danged if he had to spend the rest of his life in a posh Fort Worth high-rise. The guy is a Houston boy even if his house address actually reads Georgetown.

Fans in Houston have plenty of reason for excitement. You add Nolan Ryan (the Astros' new executive advisor) to an up-and-coming group of players, general manager Jeff Luhnow, a top-rate minor league system, and son Reid as team president (not to mention additional assistance from former Astro players Craig Biggio and Roger Clemens), and you've got all the reasons (and reason) in the world to believe that your team will eventually be a contender. A year ago, I would have told you that this scenario just won't happen. Now, it is reality.

Houston, one of your favorite sons is back in the pecking order. Going forward, the chickens will start to hatch here. Spring chickens, that is. And all that losing that's been on display the last three years? I'd look for that to start disappearing really soon.

He brings more credibility to those guys. They're on the verge of a breakthrough, Case. I predict 90 losses for them this season, but that would be a big (and realistic) improvement over last year.
