The Ideals A Muslim Must Have Pertaining to Time

Posted 02-04-2014 at 03:14 AM by quranreading

One of the major phenomena that has been a topic of debate among science and philosophy circles is time. Different scientists present a different theories about time and the way it progresses, whereas different philosophers present different ideas about the use and beneficence of time. Nevertheless, all things prove that time management and valuing time is of grave importance.

In Islam, time is of grave importance and all the dealings of a person are bound to time. Therefore, a Muslim has to make the best of time and do the activities that are recommended by Allah Almighty within the specific timeframe. The lines below discuss the importance of time in the light of Quran and hadith.

One of the major evidences that point towards the importance of time in Islam is the Islam accepts it as an entity and does not leave it upon believers to believe what they want to believe pertaining to time. In Quran, Allah Almighty says:

“By Al-‘Asr (the time). Verily, man is in loss. Except those who believe and do righteous good deeds, and recommend one another to the truth and recommend one another to patience.” (103)

These verses of Quran show that Allah Almighty swears by time and thus, it is something that is of grave importance and should not be taken lightly when it comes to dealings. Therefore, a Muslim must make use of time and indulge in acts of righteousness and tell people about truth and patience in hard and difficult times.

The importance of time in Islam is more evident in the following hadith of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), where He said:

“There are two of God’s favors that are forgotten by many people; health and free time.” (Bukhari)

This hadith makes it clear that having free time is a blessing of Allah Almighty and thus like all other blessings of Allah, a Muslim needs to be thankful for it and value it by using it in the best manner possible. Spending of time is one of the major things about which a Muslim would be asked on the judgment day. Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) says:

“Humankind will remain standing on the day of Resurrection until he is asked about four things: his life and how he spent it, his youth and how he used it up, his property and how he acquired and managed it and his knowledge and how he utilized it.” (Tirmidhi)

From this hadith, it is clear that the way a person spends the life is one of the major questions, which will be asked of a person on the Judgment Day. Therefore, it is important that a Muslim realizes the importance of time and takes necessary measures to ensure that the time spent during the life is worthy of being presentable to Allah Almighty on the Judgment Day.

One of the major problems with people pertaining to time is that they often curse it because it does not happen the way they wish it to happen. In Islam, one is not allowed to curse time, as Prophet (PBUH) said it in one of His hadiths:

“Do not curse time (al-dahr), for God is the one who crafted time.” (Muslim)

In short, from the aforementioned discussion, it can be deduced that a Muslim must value time and make the best use of it by spending it in accordance with the instructions of Allah Almighty and should never curse time, rather always be hopeful about it.
