The land of Grump

Posted 01-19-2014 at 09:41 AM by grumptacular

I really enjoy my property. Not so much my house, it's just a house, but my property is a like a paradise to me. I live on four and a half acres on the edge of the city limits. All the wild life that used to live all around the area has been pushed out to where I live, along with my neighbors properties. I have deer, skunk, fox, raccoon, snakes, occasionally coyotes, screech owls. It's beautiful and tranquil and while I can see the neighbors houses in the winter when all the foliage is gone, it still feels secluded.

I built a fire pit out in the middle of it. Pit is an understatement because I built it big enough for small bonfires. It's six feet across. I would joke with guests that I wanted to make sure it was big enough to put all the bodies in HAHAHA. It is a wreck right now from all the rain we've had this winter and needs to be cleaned back up. When my boys were younger, we would sit by the pit and I would read to them. We read Enders Game by Orson Scott Card and Stephen King's Dragon Eye.

I cut a bunch of green, maple saplings and lashed them all together to create a small serving table between two trees. Surprisingly, it's still standing and sturdy! I dug a small two foot cubed hole with a drain to act as a fridge for my Mt. Dews. We spent many nights out there roasting hot dogs and making smores. Sometimes we would camp out there but I don't think the boys ever stayed a full night out there before they would eventually retreat back up to the house and the comfort of their own beds. Some other evenings, I would build a small fire, put on my ipod, listen to Jim Croce, Pink Floyd, or the soundtrack from the movie, The Commitments, and just sit and watch the flames for hours. I've spent many hours out there just looking for solace.

When my dog G was a pup, he and I would run the perimeter of the property in order to build up his hind legs and help prevent hip dysplasia. He is strong as an ox now!

When I would get angry with my wife, I would go out and knock down the rotten trees. I would rock them back and forth (I had to watch out for the tops when they would break and not kill me), until either they fell or I exhausted myself.

I'm going to miss my woods a lot. I can't foresee having this again for many, many years. Maybe though. Time will tell.
