Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Strong Medicine At Texas? Let's Just Hope He Wins

Posted 01-11-2014 at 07:21 AM by case44

Well, the ship needed to be uprighted in Austin, and the Texas Longhorns have a new head football coach. Mike Gundy? No. Nick Saban? No way; he's committed to Alabama until he retires. Art Briles? Forget about it. He's locked in at Baylor with a new stadium to be unwrapped in August.

Charlie Strong, come on down. You're the next contestant on the Texas Longhorn trail ride. And what a ride it could become.

Okay, new AD Steve Patterson's gotten it nailed down. We've had guys like Darrell Royal and Mack Brown and that Texas aura that's associated with the prestige of such a program. Charlie Strong now comes in after having lit a fire under Louisville's formerly-flailing football program, as that team has gone 23-3 the last two seasons. He'll now be under a bigger spotlight in Austin, as the media will be relentless, not just with the papers and the TV and radio guys, but also with Longhorn Network. Let's just see how he handles that.

But aura and everything else aside, Strong is out to do one thing: Get the Longhorns back to the promised land. That means every year with serious national championship contention. First African-American coach in any UT sport? Yes, he is, but that's not important now. What does all that peripheral stuff matter if his team wins? And I believe it will win. If he recruits the right combination of players and makes something out of those who are returning, then I say, "Look out!" Texas will have its hands full with the likes of Oklahoma State, Baylor, Texas Tech, and, quite possibly, a potientially resurgent West Virginia, Kansas State, and TCU, and this Big 12 conference could make some serious noise in the years ahead.

Strong will succeed in Texas, as he's proven he can flat out coach. Stay tuned; spring football is just mere weeks away.

I think Charlie will work out fine at Texas. If he can do the same wonders in Austin that he did at Louisville, then Texas will win a national championship in a couple of years. The Louisville accomplishments, mind you, were no small feat.
