My oldest has turned 18 today

Posted 01-06-2014 at 08:27 PM by grumptacular

My little girl is getting all grown up! She is an amazing young lady. She has been been doing what she needs to in order to finish school, but she hates it! At this point she has no plans for college, and I guess that is ok. I am hoping in the next couple years she will come to her senses and maximize her potential.

Her original plan was to go in to the military, which I though was a great plan! Unfortunately, that didn't work out for her. When her mom passed away, I put her in therapy. During that process, she was diagnosed with depression. You can't fill out paperwork in today's military and state you have depression. They won't take you. Her recruiter had us step outside and explained to us why, but he said, it is an easy fix!, just fill out the paperwork and don't include any of that stuff.

My daughter said she would take the paperwork, but would like to think about it. When we got in the car, she unloaded!! Her argument was how is she supposed to start a career that promotes to provide integrity and honor, but she has to lie to get in? I didn't have anything to come back with! She was absolutely correct in her thoughts and I was proud of her for her choice. Heartbroken that she will miss out on a great opportunity, but she was absolutely right! Life threw her another curve ball.

She has been working at a fast food place for the past year. Has never called out, and never even been late! I don't think that is a common thing for young people today. I am proud of her for her strong work ethic!

She is a voracious reader, and doesn't limit herself to just one or two genre's. She'll read anything!! She loves to experiment with her looks. Particularly with her hair!! She is very artistic and has mentioned interests in tattooing, but isn't real keen about the fact that she might have to apprentice for a couple years. She is very witty and clever, and has a knack for hitting you with some pretty well timed zingers.

Most impressive to me, she is so strong and independent! It is a double edge sword, because I already miss her, but wow! She is tough!!

For the past couple years, she has been haranguing me for a tattoo. It was easy for me to say not until your 18!! Well, today was the day. She followed my rules; know what you want and where you want it for at least a year. So she got Agony and Ecstasy set off with two chrysanthemums, on her ribs!!!!! OMG!! I was surprised she was that tough! She hung in there though! Kept her flinching down to a minimum! Hard core!! I do wish she had picked something that didn't seem like something a kid would get, but hey, she is a kid. It's on there now!!! HAHAHA

I know I am partial!, but I am a very, very proud Dad!!
