Doing the right thing

Posted 01-06-2014 at 09:40 AM by grumptacular

A poster came on with an issue a few days ago. From her perspective, she probably knew what the right thing was, but put it out on the boards to likely gain validation for what she really wanted. What she wanted wasn't wrong per say, but relationships are difficult and complicated. After three pages of posts, she listened to what everyone had to say and she did the most sensible thing. I hope she gave herself some kudos, she earned it.

Sometimes doing the right thing is tough. We all have a selfish side and for better or worse, we do things, sometimes without thinking, that feeds into that selfishness. To make a conscious effort to not feed that selfishness can be difficult. Particularly when you are only speculating that something could truly go wrong. Sometimes there are plenty of examples that nothing will go wrong. To go against what you personally want, despite those examples, is strong!!

It is a strength that I don't think most of us as a society try to work on. People floor me with their mindsets of doing what ever they want, when ever they want, to whom ever they choose. And these are my peers!! It would be different if we were all in our 20's, but at some point you have to grow up. You have to come to grips with the reality that our behavior does effect other people, even if it is not in direct way. Everything we do and say is observed. Sometimes, just subliminally. But it becomes a brand we create. I think most of us try in our mind to create a "good brand", but have a tough time keeping in mind that we need to work on building that brand every day, with every action.

If you have a brand that is good, reliable, and strong, that comes out in self confidence and a higher self esteem. You have a brand that is marketable, whether that is for a job or a partner, or a loan, what ever. If you haven't worked on your brand, then you have the opposite, and if to much time goes by, the individual may feel to try to build that brand now, might be futile. They might feel that even putting in the hard work, may never create a brand that is marketable. That is unfortunate, but to anyone who has the power to think, reflect, and measure, how can you not get to that point where you have to? In my opinion, it is never to late to try and build that brand, but it does get harder the older you get, and the rewards may not be as great.
