Some very Sad Numbers

The final numbers are in for 2013 and 988 people were killed on Tennessee highways for the year. That number should make us want to have a revolution, to get out on the highways in mass with flags and threats of sending people to the mental institutions but alas it hardly makes a dent in our physic.
By comparison 125 soldiers were killed in Afghanistan in 2013 and of course Tennessee is only one state. About 34,000 were killed in auto crashes nationwide.
What to do? Federal, State and local governments try to protect us from ourselves and they do help a lot but clearly a major uprising of the people is called for, not just against drunk driving, that's a no brainier but something that raises consciousness to a much higher level. Some well done commercials that run over and over again like those damn Viagra ads. A civilized people should not let such mass killings go on and on year after year, when there is a lot more that can be done to reduce the carnage.

Perhaps the government should require insurance companies to use 5% of their revenue to run safety ads on all the hand held devices and all other media. In most states insurance is mandatory anyway; we could do without all those crazy Geico and Progressive ads. There has to be a way, if only we would insist.

Maybe the police should actually pull over drivers they see that are clearly distracted or can hear their music from a block away. Give them a ticket that REALLY hurts. Enforcement is a great deterrent.
