Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

He Once Beat Them, Now He's Joining Them

Posted 12-17-2013 at 02:03 PM by case44

Never would I have imagined that the player I'm about to mention would ever become a Houston Astro. Incredibly, the Colorado Rockies were actually willing to part with him in favor of someone they think is going to be better. And the guy that is joining the 'Stros used to beat the tar out of them when Houston was a member of the National League. I mean, he gave them fits!

That's the kind of player the Astros like and that's why they were able to get Dexter Fowler to sign with them.

I applaud this signing. Fowler is a great outfielder, good defender, and also a good hitter who gets on base often in games. He's the top choice for leadoff hitter that Houston has seen in some time and will start in center field in 2014. This guy also has incredible speed, both on the bases and in the outfield. A switch-hitter, Fowler will give the 'Stros an incredible advantage in nearly any situation. This, most certainly, is as good an acquisition as any the Astros have had in the last five years. He was a game changer in Colorado, and he'll be one in Houston, too.

Here's more.

The future surely is brighter than ever for Houston baseball. Add Fowler to a plethora of good, young prospects and this makes the team that much better. And George Springer is coming, too. Robbie Grossman and L J Hoes may platoon in left, Fowler will start in center, and Springer in right. That has the potential to be a killer outfield.

The Astros got about 20 games better with these acquisitions, Case. They also got Jesus Guzman to help out in the lineup. He'll be a great help offensively.
