Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Creation Of Class 6A In Texas Could Force Big Changes In Frisco

Perhaps you sports fans in Texas have heard the rumors. An announcement was made back in February, really, without too many folks noticing, and it's looking more and more definite that there will be a Class 6A in Texas high school athletics, beginning with the 2014 UIL realignment.

Here's the dill, pickle: All the existing classes will likely just get moved up one notch without any changes to enrollment number requirements. The reasons are that Class A will be split up in two sections, and playoff games and additional sports will be added in Class 3A. We've already got too many playoff teams in Texas as it is, but, hey, my opinion's not important to the UIL honchos. At any rate, it's going to be a surprise for some districts hoping to avoid playing sports in higher classifications than where they're at now.

Such is the case in the Frisco Independent School District. They have six high schools, five of which are currently competing in Class 4A, and one in Class 3A, with an additional campus to be added in nine months. Their one 3A school, Lone Star, will likely move up to 4A due to a strong surge in enrollment growth that's been long-awaited in that attendance area. That's the good news on that end. The goal in the district is for their schools not to play in the state's largest classification (meaning 5A right now) for the purpose of smaller class settings and higher student participation. And we have an interesting scenario here. Will we have all the others remain in 4A?

Not so fast, Lee Corso.

Given the recent enrollment figures and what is being projected in Frisco in the coming years, as much as I've wanted to see Lone Star play Wakeland in football, it's looking like it's still not going to happen. That is, unless head coaches Jeff Rayburn and Marty Secord do an agreement to schedule each other in non-district, which could happen. You'll likely see all Frisco schools lumped into 5A at the next realignment, but with the new rules, it's nothing to fret over. If the minimum-maximum enrollment requirements do change (highly unlikely, but still possible), you may see a split in Frisco, with the smaller schools participating in 4A and the remainder in 5A. And the new high school that's coming? That would be Independence High School on Frisco's east side, which will open next fall with juniors, sophomores, and freshmen. It's expected they will have 1,200 students at the opening bell, the largest opening of any high school in Frisco's history. They will be taking the field for varsity competition this coming August. By the way, the mascot has yet to be decided, but Independence's colors will be purple, black, and white.

By the time Punxsutawney Phil makes his annual weather prediction again, we will find out what happens when the UIL in Texas convenes and announces the new district set-ups to go into effect for the next two years. We'll know soon enough how everything plays out.

Update: The latest newsletter from Frisco ISD (December 3) gave the announcement that all of Frisco's high schools will play in Class 5A starting next fall. The first rounds of realignment will concentrate on football and basketball.

Also, this thought: With classification changes, it's going to be interesting when the UIL Music committee makes their determination about what year Class 6A will be able to advance to the state marching contest. 4A, 2A, and 1A advanced this year, and 5A and 3A are due next year. Stay tuned on that one.

If Frisco schools move to 5A, that means that Wakeland will have a rare opportunity to participate in the state marching competition for a second year in a row. They'll likely be taking steps to get focused on that goal since it's likely that next year is a state year once again for them. And Lone Star High School will make the jump from 3A all the way to 5A. Won't that be something?
