If you grew up, as I did being told that everything that happens is either caused by God or at least is allowed by God; then you might want to read, " The Doors of the Sea: Where was God in the Tsunami?" by David B. Hart. Prof. Hart is considered by many to be on par with, C.S. Lewis in his in depth theology. Even to look up the book on Amazon and read the reviews would be helpful.
Of course the same question, comes up when we think of the typhoon that just hit the Philippines.
Indeed to carry the logic out that most of us have been taught would mean that at the judgement day; we would have to put God on trial and ask why? So all we are saying is that we in general haven't thought very deeply about all the implications of putting the blame on God for these horrible events.
