This is the true continuing saga of my escape from California. While California is a beautiful, unique place, it is wrought with political turmoil, over-taxation and ridiculous laws. We want to be free.
So we have arranged to move to the lovely Oregon Coast area. And build and run an antique store. To enjoy life in a leisurely fashion.
This is my story.

Opportunists

Posted 01-29-2009 at 11:35 PM by DezertGirl

We are opportunists. This is how we make a living. There are several things my guy and I do for work and it's all good and all legal.
When the recycling market is up, we scrap. Last summer we were getting $420 a "long ton" (2,200 lbs) for scrap steel, almost $3.00/lb for copper, $2.80/lb for brass and so on. We have a commercial account and get the best prices. We would order two 20-foot containers and fill them up with about 8 to 10 tons of steel. Great payback!
The scrap market tanked last fall. Steel went down to zero! So, we adapted. (It is making a slow recovery.)
I'm a signmaker and website designer by trade and training. Advertising is my game and I love it. So I make the best signs, letter automobiles, design, repair and maintain websites, even design ads for national magazines. I also do a lot of consulting in my field.
My guy is amazing. He's a licensed specialty contactor who holds his license in Oregon (not California). From painting, concrete work, framing, drywall...he can do it all and more. He cuts wood, handles the animals, can back a tandem axle trailer for miles, and isn't afraid of anything! I admire his work ethic and skills.
Together we attend ranch auctions and estate sales and sell on eBay, Craigslist and at the swap meet. At this time we are focusing on "unloading" our personal items and haven't attended an auction in a long time. We move thousands of dollars of merchandise in this manner and it's one of the most entertaining way to make money!
Our plan for Oregon is to build an antique store and stock it in this manner. Internet sales will continue as well.
I raise Angora goats and these animals produce a fine wool called mohair. I'm sure you've heard of it. I shear these animals twice a year and sell the mohair by the pound. I also raise Pygmy goats and sell the adorable babies.
We are opportunists in the most interesting manner. We do quite well and are very adaptable to the changing economy. Oregon beckons...
