Requiem for a Robin

Posted 09-29-2013 at 07:23 PM by LookinForMayberry

We were speculating over our split pea soup whether your flocks were gathering in plans of a migration south,

Or were you arriving from a more northern climate in hopes of wintering here?

We were so happy that you'd found the cotoneaster berries,

And the rains were keeping Bigun indoors to watch benignly.

Then, we heard that forceful THUD on the sunroom's eastern window; the same window that took one of your brothers (sister?) last spring.

I prayed you'd only been stunned while Brian went to check.

When he returned his grim face spoke the words I so did not want to hear.

After lunch, as he carried your so perfect lifeless form to the tree stump where we feed the crows, I watched the rains dilute the small stain of blood where you had lain,

Until there was no sign at all.

I will remember you. Fear not. You did not die in vain.

So beautifully put, with a sensitivity to other forms of life.
