Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Economizing While Planning Vacation Is No Easy Challenge

Posted 09-28-2013 at 07:14 AM by case44

For the distance it will take to travel from Dallas down to South Padre Island, the credit card at the gas pump will see some charges (probably more than I'd care to pay). And because of that sheer distance, some 580 miles, I'd have to also do some sleep layovers in Austin and San Antonio.

Face it, sports fans, your favorite blogger is not going to be staying at the Ritz-Carlton anytime soon. But the beauty of the Internet is this: You get to do more homework and planning and you get to see the visual peripherals that wouldn't be offered the "dinosaur" way. Oh, I'll get a brochure from any nearby Convention & Visitors Bureau (which, by the way, I've already done), but it's been a faster and more productive process to get online and find some cheaper deals and do such without dealing with a roach motel. Hotels are never inexpensive, and even a three-night stay will run at least $200. The key now is keeping costs down for all the other things in the days leading up to the trip. On the trip, I'll be on the beach a bit, sight-seeing, and maybe taking in a museum along the way. And, of course, food, food, and more food.

Barring any unexpected expenses, I anticipate a great time and plenty of money to keep me on my toes.

If there's any good news regarding the gas pump, it's that prices are easing down a little bit. Hope it happens a little more by the time I depart Dallas for the beaches.

That, by the way, is 18 days away.
