Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Scattershooting Again / A Good Thing Happened To Me On Friday The 13th

In the tradition of former sports writer Blackie Sherrod (well, almost), your favorite blogger is back again as we go hither and yon with some Scattershooting. We just came off of Friday the 13th, and I thought I had a good day yesterday. So, now, I get to write to you..................on the 14th ............and I'll begin by sharing with you an interesting experience that you just don't get every day. As per the every now and then, I'll also give you a few connections to some important and informative things that may interest you, and I'll even shoot the breeze a little bit. Let's go, shall we?

Normally, on Friday nights during football season, I'd usually attend a high school football game in my area. It's a great Texas tradition no matter where one would be in the Lone Star State. Well, as I arrived at the game in Frisco, Texas, we had a little light rain falling down. I waited in the parking lot for it to stop, and then it did. Fortunately, the game would start an hour thereafter, so the timing was pretty good. But that wasn't the only timing. By the time I'd reach the ticket counter to purchase my ticket, lo and behold, out of nowhere, here comes a young, beautiful, blonde-haired lady who happened to have two extra tickets to give away. I obliged and she gave me one and didn't have to pay seven dollars. How about that?! Maybe I should have asked for her phone number......

Oh, and for you Frisco football fans, Wakeland lost to Richardson Pearce, 26-23. Bummer.

Some of you out there, including myself, are trying hard to lose weight. Here is some testimony from someone who has had her ups and downs with weight control: 'Biggest Loser' star Alison Sweeney on how she lost her weight | Fox News

I can't believe it's only five weeks until my first-ever trip down to South Padre Island, Texas. An exhaustive trip, but I will have layovers in San Antonio going down and Buda, TX, coming back. It will actually be my second trip to the Rio Grande Valley, but that first trip took place thirty years ago as a teenager and a passenger in the backseat behind mom and dad. So, I'll be taking it upon myself to take the long travel come October, but it will be a lot of fun. The hotel will be right on the beach, so I'm guaranteed some great views no matter which room I get. My homework includes looking up some local places that are not available in Dallas. Always great fun, but the problem is, I'll get addicted to restaurants if I like their food, and to the point where I'd love to get back next week. More info will be brought to you when we get closer to that time.

The Houston Astros are currently (at this writing, not necessarily while you're reading this) in the midst of a four-game winning streak. They just had a convincing win (9-7) at home against the Los Angeles Angels, a team Houston has actually owned this season. Excitement will definitely abound this offseason as the Astros wait for the arrival of outfield prospect George Springer, one of the major leagues' top prospects and a standout hitter at the plate.

Thoughts and prayers go out this day to the many folks struggling with flooding rains in and around the Denver area these past few days. One of the drivers who works for our dispatch team where I work sez it's really bad up there. The rains just need to stop because they've had too much to take in the last week.

Time now for more stupid criminal news. This one takes place in Arizona, where a guy needed a ride home from the police station. He apparently didn't call his mommy first....

Preparations are continuing in Downtown Dallas for the anniversary of the assassination of former President John F Kennedy in Dealey Plaza. November 22 is only a couple of months away. Fifty years ago, we had the original "Nightmare On Elm Street" as the motorcade traveled on that fateful ride along Dallas' Elm Street when the shots were fired. The remembrance will be a big event for travelers and there may not be an empty space downtown on that day. By the way, in 1963, I had not yet been born, but my mother was decorating in a store just two blocks from the motorcade route.

Boy, YouTube gets a little too addictive. The other night, I searched out some more audio and video from Dallas' TV and radio history. I got to hear audio clips from the old Eyewitness News on Dallas' KDFW-TV from way back in the 1970s, WFAA radio clips from Don Thompson and his music show in the '60s, and old newscast video clips with former WFAA-TV anchor Murphy Martin and News 8 On The Move. Nostalgia really is great when you have the time to look. You really capture the things of history, and YouTube offers adventures of the incredible.

And now, it's time for our Word Of The Day. Today's word is dry. Lots of usages and situations here, as right now, I'm about to dry some washed towels in the dryer. When my mouth gets dry, it's time for some liquid. This writer requires that very often. And the rain I mentioned earlier from last night's high school football game in Frisco put a brief end to a dry spell. Wish we could tell those in Colorado to stay dry, but please keep them in your prayers as the rains end and they begin to pick up the pieces.

And there you are.

I'm starting to think that the Friday the 13th thing is all a myth. My day was uneventful and didn't have any strange things happen.

Case, you almost picked up a woman at the ticket counter. Luc-ky you!

^^^ I was wise not to. Didn't want to cause a scene.

Forgot to mention the following in the column: Frisco lost two businesses at The Shops At Starwood. They saw The Cupcakery shut its doors, along with Tootie Pie Gourmet Café. I really thought that both of them would have a lot of success at Starwood, but they didn't get much business. Probably no wonder they haven't started construction yet on Phase 3 at Starwood. Don't know the status on that.
