My Reaction to Disney's Frozen Spoilers

Yesterday was kind of a big day in the Disney Frozen fandom.

Why? Well, apparently, some numb-nut over at Google decided, "Hey, why don't we publish the Frozen Junior Novelization today?"

This wasn't just some preview of the beginning pages, oh no.

The ending of the novel (and by extension, the movie) was included. The many plot points were laid out. Some new screen-caps were shown. And some cute moments with Olaf were written. (Yes, I like the talking snowman.)

And perhaps most importantly, the villain was revealed.

Oh. My. God.

It has been known from the get-go that Elsa the Snow Queen was misunderstood. So obviously, a real villain would need to exist. The result?

Well, to be perfectly honest, I don't like the real villain. Not that much. But it's for different reasons that what other people have said.

With out giving too much away, I think it's too forced. The villain's main goal is power. Yeah, and? Why should I care about you if you're going to have such a weak rise to villainy?

No seriously, there's little to no build up of this baddie. One second I wouldn't suspect this person, then it's out of nowhere it's BOOM DID I FORGET TO TELL YOU I'M EVIL? I guess there was a red herring so it isn't TOO predictable, but still. And the way the villain is defeated is friggin' hilarious. If you read it, you know what I mean. I assume the movie will be more detailed/ gruesome, but what I read seemed too... Random? It made me question the legitimacy of the villain.

It's a shame, because Disney could have done something better, in my opinion. Is it an awful ending? For me, not really. For others. ohohoh... I am NOT going there. But it does live up to the sisters theme of the flick. I just wish it was more unique and adventurous in it's take.

I remember that when Doug Walker reviewed Tangled, he praised the story. He said something along the lines of how everything had a reason in the movie. (For instance, the magic flower came from a sun drop, Rapunzel grew her hair out because it was magic, she lived in a secluded tower because she was kidnapped as a baby, etc.)

And I seriously feel that the first act to Frozen has that same sense of reasoning. Things aren't just there just because. Even the more mystical stuff was used well.

It's the later acts where story issues become obvious. Maybe I'm being judgmental, but I feel that some of the later bits of the story are trying to be like Tangled. Which is not the best idea, as what worked in Tangled may not work best for the story Frozen has. It's not "Tangled in the snow" like many predicted, but it isn't fully original, either. I feel bad saying that, because I realize the staff at Disney were on a very tight shift trying to finish the movie. Maybe they rushed at some parts?

I dunno, maybe the movie will have a stronger presentation for these later acts.

I'm definitely seeing Frozen when it comes out. It will be interesting to see if the movie going public will see some of the problems I saw, or if I am just being a cynical nerd.

Time will tell, I suppose.
