My First Ramble

Uh... geez... how do you start a blog post?

Well, I guess some basic facts would be good.

Hi, I'm DemureDoll. I'm an incoming freshman to City College in New York. I am entering the engineering program (which, if you've read my early forum posts, is something I am dubious about). I like reading books, magazine, and fan-fiction (don't judge.)

Every once in a while, I try to practice playing the harmonica. Progress isn't really present, though I can play the first few bits to the “Shrek” theme. (You know, the one that goes da da dum, da da dum, da da da, da~da da dum...)

According to the Meyer-Briggs Type Indicator, I am an INFP. This in a nutshell means I'm quiet, indecisive, idealistic, and future oriented.

Hmm, what else...?

Oh, I am extremely excited about Disney's “Frozen” which is coming out this Thanksgiving.

Actually, I'm usually excited about any upcoming Disney movie. I was keeping track of “The Princess & the Frog” and “Tangled” news a year prior. There was this one video from summer 2010 that I can't find anymore that showed the preliminary animation to “Tangled”. It was awesome and I had a field day speculating the film with it.

But “Frozen” in particular look like it's going to be a beautifully crafted masterpiece. The tragic story of sisters torn apart by magic, misunderstandings, and ironically love. How deep is that? I am so buying the novelization when it comes out in October. I wish I could have been there, doing some storyboards, or writing the script, or drawing the layout. Something. I keep hearing, even now on August 22, how animation STILL isn't done. I just wish I could help.

And then today I found out about the next fairytale Disney's doing. “Giants” will be a retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk. And judging by some of the names (Angelina, Marco), it might be set in Italy.

Yep, looks like it'll be a great film when it comes out...

In 2016.

Yeah, doesn't make sense for speculation now, huh? (Though that won't stop me.)

How they tease me so. But I repeat: I WANT TO BE THERE.

I know the idea of becoming an animator for Disney, or Pixar, or Dreamworks, or any animation company is ridiculous. It's not because I'd suck at a job like that (though I probably would...). Nor is it because it's unrealistic (it's real, alright).

It's because a lot of people wish to do that type of work. A lot of people want to be the creative person. A lot of people are just like me.

Too many, I think. I'd be competing against much more passionate individuals. I have ideas, yeah. But then who doesn't? An amoeba, maybe.

That's harsh, I admit. Let's move on, shall we?

You ever heard of The Lizzie Bennet Diaries? It was this awesome web-series based on Pride and Prejudice. All the characters were modernized, and I personally loved the dynamics of a web-series that also used social media. I hear the next web-series will be called Emma Approved, and will be based on the book Emma by Jane Austen.

And, well, I kind of fell in love with reading Pride and Prejudice (after reading it for the first time!) in English class.

(That's another thing. Writing books that people can enjoy decades after you die... yes please. Though it's a weakness of mine to think of things like the PLOT. Maybe I should start with fan-fiction...)

Well, I would like to do something like LBD, too. Except make my own story instead of rehashing a book.

Okay, and MAYBE make it animated. (Because why not?)

But it probably will never happen. (My screen name should be Debbie Downer...)

On Kickstarter, Aaron Blaise & Chuck Williams (you might remember them from such films as: “The Lion King”, “Beauty and the Beast”, and “Aladdin”) are planning to make an independent animated movie called “Art Story”. It's the tale of a boy and his grandfather who jump in and out of the many worlds within paintings. How cool is that?

Then we delve into the financing.

The budget goal? $350,000. It's pretty darn close to 100%, and here's hoping they reach thats goal. But they confess that even that won't cover much. They say, and I'm quoting:

“The money we raise here will get us started and is only a fraction of what the whole effort will take. Any studio, any company or individual who wants to fund it will want to know there's an audience for this kind of film. You backing us now, with whatever you can give, means there is someone else who wants to see it. We need lots of backers. It takes many raindrops to fill up a bucket.”

Life can be so cruel. And for the creative people, I imagine it's very confusing.

Do you dive head first, knowing that if you fail, rebounding will be incredibly difficult? Do you keep your ideas to yourself and hope one day you can break out of you boring office job?

Do you make the avant garde? Or do you do the safe and familiar?

Do you use your skills for what YOU want? Or does everyone need to succumb to some level of “selling out”?

...

Awkward... this post seems to have shifted from introductions to hypothetical questions.

My bad.

Well, I better sign off. PBS has this British drama on (another interest of mine that no one shares... sigh). And then it's bed time.

So... until next time, I'll still be DemureDoll.

"Do you use your skills for what YOU want? Or does everyone need to succumb to some level of “selling out”? Yeah me thinks so. Compromise and blending in to the servant mentality works pretty well. Its wisdom in most cases.
