Learn to lead yourself

Posted 01-28-2009 at 11:29 PM by PastorBill

One of the things I have noticed about myself at times and other people is that we are often times very quick to point out the failures of others & to give them a hard time about their mistakes. We want to pronounce doom and judgment especially if it affects us in a negative way. Where is mercy for them? We are very quick to give ourselves mercy and make excuses for ourselves. We need to not be so focused on leading others and become more focused on leading ourselves well. Human nature seems to endow us with the ability to size up everybody in the world except ourselves. One day Frederick the Great of Prussia was walking on the outskirts of Berlin when he encountered a very old man walking at a rapid focused pace in the opposite direction. "Who are you?" Frederick asked the old man. "I am a King," replied the old man. "A King!" laughed Frederick. "Over what kingdom?" "Over myself," replied the old man. We need to understand that we are kings over our own lives. How will you rule your life? Will you rule it with would of, could of, should of, but didn't. A real king excepts his mistakes, makes the necessary changes, & moves on. So I ask you again how will you rule your life? Below is a list of keys to lead yourself.
  1. Learn how to follow: "Civilization is always in danger when those who have never learned to obey are given the right to command."
  2. Develop self-discipline: "When we are foolish we want to conquer the world. When we are wise, we want to conquer ourselves."
  3. Practice patience: "Being a few steps ahead makes you a leader, but being 50 steps ahead can make you a martyr."
  4. Seek accountability: "When you see a good man, think of emulating him; when you see a bad man, examine your heart."
The thing that proves your ability to lead yourself is what you do from day to day to lead yourself. The good news in all of this is that you are not a lone. The Holy Spirit was sent to be your helper. God bless you and thanks for reading this blog.
