Capitalism and the Garbage Truck

Posted 08-19-2013 at 10:25 AM by Fortoggie

I can hear it roaring all around the neighborhood, the big monster of a truck that comes by every Monday and throws out it's mechanical arms, grabs the garbage can and hosts it high, way up over the vehicle, shakes it a little and then sets in down again. A few years ago, there was a three man team that came by; two men rode the back, jumped off at each stop and manhandled the garbage into the smaller, less expensive truck.
Yes, there was trouble keeping good help, there was no pride in the job, there was a lot of injuries, the pay was poor, benefits were practically none existent and occasionally the city would have a claim against it's insurance for a back injury or even a disability claim.
Then the capitalist's stepped in. now there's a big parking lot a few miles away that has a hundred or so of the big monster trucks, costing many millions of dollars. The rich who have plenty of money to invest, did what they do best, they changed things.
The hundreds of men throughout this area, who once had a job, albeit not a desirable one, no longer have those jobs. Try looking for a new job, when all you have to say is that I worked on a garbage truck for five years.
Three independent garbage collectors tried to compete with the big guys but ran into all kinds of obstacles. Even their access was cut at the landfills. Typically new technology works best for those with money. It makes them richer and makes the poor, poorer and now those at the top who are bringing in big money from their investments, strongly resist having to pay taxes that furnish food stamps to those who were laid off.
This is not an attack on capitalism. That is not a battle anyone can win. But maybe, just maybe we can shame them into realizing that it is they who have deprived millions at the bottom from earning a living.

You can not shame a rich man into doing the 'right thing'.

They are at the top of the 'food chain', while, we 'bottom feeders' just grovel along, feeding off the scraps they want to toss to us.

Businessmen are a neccesary evil in our Society. Some do employ people, but, they try to do a lot with less, and expect to pay a pittance out, and expect the best from everyone who works for them! Shame, but, its how its always going to be. Thanks moderinzation and machinery for that one. Some of it good, some of it bad, but, its here to stay.

    I wish you well...
