Its not bad at all if its dry. We have made this our route from PA<->NC several times. Very recently we drove from PA<->Raleigh this way and it was a bad day and bad choice - was raining all day right from PA. So the problem is unless you stop for long breaks, by the time you get to the Fancy gap are in NC you are worn out and tired and rains make it worse. Lessons from our trip-
1. Take good rest at the Tamarack stop in WVA
2. If it rains trucks make it worse with the water splashing so stay patient
3. Once you enter the stretch towards Winston Salem from I-77( a good 1 hr stretch ) we faced HEAVY downpour (visibility<10feet) and that caused a lot of water clogging over the bridges (many creeks and small rivers in this area).. so be extra careful for water clogging and hydroplaning on the bridges...
Like I said on better days i'd pick this route over MD and N-VA traffic - but with elements involved, plan with extra time is all. BTW - gets spectacular in Fall.

We are actually going to do it in two days. Leave Friday and drive from Ohio to Charleston WV until 8:30pm then leave Saturday around 2:30 to Raleigh, that way it will be during the day time (we can't leave early in the morning and we don't want to be in a tricky spot late in the evening). We checked the weather, so far it looks like it's not going to be raining, so I'm praying evehng ges smoothly!
