Is Freedom Just Another Word?

Posted 06-24-2013 at 02:14 PM by Fortoggie

" Freedom is just another word for crying the blues", that's what the old song said; could it be true? The dictionary can get to be rather lengthy and quite involved when trying to define freedom.
My UPS man told me that they work under 240 rules and regulations. Some days a supervisor follows him at a distance to see if he parks the truck according to regulations. Next they watch to see if he is getting off the truck as he is supposed to, does he pick up the load as he has been trained to, and if he opens the door of the business in a proper way, adinfinitum.
Of course most of us think of freedom in a political way and scream to high heaven if we think the government is in some way limiting our freedom.
A fellow I know goes on and on about government restrictions and yet he has signed a homeowners association agreement not to park any cars on the street after 11:00 PM and that he will not park an RV on his property. Now that's probably not a bad idea, since keeping the subdivision neat and clean helps keep property values up so maybe it's that we don't mind living with restrictions if we have something to do with making the rules.
One definition of freedom is to be exempt from controls; but how many of us would want to be on the highway without some rules of the road and without having policemen out there to enforce the rules?
Yes, there are times when I am just as frustrated as anyone about all the rules, whether by big corporations are from city state are federal governments. But what to do? You can't even get on an airplane without being confined with all sorts of rules.
Has many of our freedoms from restrictions been lost forever?

If we can't change Washington in a hurry, then the answer to your question is "Yes."
