Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

RGV Could Fly High With A Big Airport

I'll preface by saying that this is just a thought. Later on this year, I plan to visit South Padre Island and the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas. It's a trip that's long overdue on my part, since I'm dying to see what life on the island is like (but without the spring breakers).

No, I am not planning to fly down there, as I'm a Texas roads fanatic and want to see the progress of the new Interstate 69 that's currently being pieced together along U.S. Highway 77. I'd be nuts not to check it out. But more on that later on. The Rio Grande Valley has been on my mind, and in looking at the size of that metro area, you'd think that they could support a large international airport. And, so, your favorite blogger took to Google Maps this week. There are three good-sized cities that make up the area's identity: Harlingen, Brownsville, and McAllen. All three of those cities have airports, but none of them are particularly huge. It appears that Harlingen's Valley International Airport has the most space and looks like it's large enough that, if expanded, could become the area's main airport. Since Valley is the name, it makes the most sense to go a bigger direction there rather than build an all-new airport.

Why not? I can envision an expanded terminal at Valley that can be twice its current size. I'm not suggesting trying to imitate Dallas/Fort Worth International or Houston Bush Intercontinental. That's not the plan. Valley can become the big airport that the Rio Grande Valley citizens could sure use, using more airline service to more places and hopefully getting to where they can use larger aircraft. As for the area's two other airports (McAllen Miller International and Brownsville-South Padre Island International), well, they could be converted to city-level private airports or cargo airports. Look, you've got Interstate 69 and possibly two more interstates coming into the picture of the Valley's economy by further changing transportation needs there, and I can even envision a freeway connector along State Loop 499 that may include a direct-connect to and from the future I-69. This could be huuuuge! Imagine: One go-to airport for RGV residents and visitors that could really be a greater economic engine for a community badly in need of a big boost.

And if new airplanes and flights weren't enough, it'd be another excuse for Valley residents to plant a few more palm trees.

Wouldn't be a bad idea with an area that size. They get so many tourists.

Padre, huh? Surprised a guy like you hasn't been there yet.

It's an area that's getting larger, even though none of the larger cities have more than 200,000 residents. There's this cluster of towns and cities near the border and along four very important highways. You'd think that, with that type of clientele, mixed with frequent South Padre travelers, a larger airport would be necessary.
