Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Ryan Leaving Rangerland? That May Or May Not Open Up A Door In Houston

Posted 03-09-2013 at 07:04 AM by case44

I've always been one of those peeps that tell you to 'never say never'. With the tale of two major league baseball teams in Texas, we currently have the penthouse (Texas Rangers) and the outhouse (Houston Astros). The former has gone from one of baseball's worst franchises to one of its better-run teams and has been consistently contending in the last five years. The latter has just fallen off the horse and is trying to get back in the saddle a mere seven years after its only World Series appearance.

That said, have you heard about the latest goings-on in Arlington regarding one Lynn Nolan Ryan? That's right, Nolan Ryan, the erstwhile Texas Rangers team president and former fireballing righty, has gone through some change that has caused uncertainly of his role with the organization. You can read writer after writer speculating about the guy's possible future and what that would mean to the Rangers' outfit. While Ryan has meant so much to the Rangers with his presence alone on the team, regardless of what he's done, I still offer this comment:

He's a Houston guy, not a Dallas or a Fort Worth guy.

Now, don't get me wrong. The guy's a die-hard Texan to the bone, and that includes the T-bone steaks that come from his ranching prowess. But Ryan had spent years in the Houston area (nearby Alvin, to be exact) and that's his actual home. Could Astros owner Jim Crane actually make an offer, in some form, to bring the Ryan Express back to the Astros, where he previously was an advisor and, before that, a player? Houston's team situation already includes a front office with former catcher and infielder Craig Biggio and general manager Jeff Luhnow, who only played high school baseball but never college or pro (unlike what was written in an article I'm going to show you below), and who had been very successful with the St Louis Cardinals front office. And let's not forget Roger Clemens, the former pitcher who just recently stepping in to mentor the young mound specialists.

If I'm the Rangers (my actual hometown team but one which I've abandoned years before Nolan Ryan became team president), I'd be nervous by now. Would they even dare let this guy get away knowing that the other team in Texas might lasso him back to their undertaking??

Now, with all the Astros have done to their front office and organizational situation, there may actually still be room for one more, even if may be just as an advisor. Houston may be primed for a situation too good to pass up. Stay tuned for more juicy baseball drama here in the Lone Star State. It's must-see TV.

Meanwhile, here's that article from ESPN...

Houston Astros should pursue Nolan Ryan - ESPN

If he really does leave Arlington, it could devastate the Rangers in one sense, but they'll still have Jon Daniels as GM in another, as he has been able to sustain the Rangers' recent success.

Wouldn't it be something if Nolan Ryan really does go back to the Astros? I think it would be.

I'd have to say it could be a longshot with both scenarios, mal. No matter how positive Bob Simpson wants to make it sound, Nolan can decide if he wants to leave and that things in the current structure aren't to his liking. In Houston, they can make a place for him, but would there be room with all the stars that I've mentioned already? It creates an interesting scenario, but it's a potential distraction to the Rangers.
