Lakewood's Beck Center for the Arts

Posted 03-08-2013 at 09:09 AM by lindarogers

Clevelanders may or may not know that Lakewood has a little gem by the name of Beck Center for the Arts. I can walk there from my house and I do when the weather is nice. I’ve seen several plays and art exhibits there. My next door neighbors work in the props department. I’ve taken out of town guests there too. Last Friday Bob and I attended their Marquee Happy Hour. I didn’t know what to expect but I thought it sounded interesting. What’s not to love about free art, food, music and cheap drinks?
We got there right at 5:30, found some wine and enjoyed the art exhibit in the main entry hall. Then we found some food and a seat and more wine. A wonderful piano player was entertaining everyone and he was very good. I wondered if there was a different entertainer coming on later. There was.
The main cat in Lounge Kitty came on at about 6:30. She was somewhere between a Diana Ross backup singer and a drag queen. It conjured up nights in P-Town so I knew I was going to like the show. Sure enough, her act was fantastic. She had a wonderful voice and was very funny. Her piano player was so good and perfectly suited for the act. I understand there are more members and I look forward to seeing them all in another show in the very near future when there are no kids in the audience. I can only imagine. We were thoroughly entertained as the crowd thickened with people there to see the play. Some even got to show their stuff during the audience participation moments. Bob and I really had a great time listening, watching and laughing. We were sorry to see it end but we stuck around.
After the Lounge Kitty show, we headed into Gypsy Beans, the fantastic coffee house and bakery right in the Beck. Then we hit the second exhibit in the east end of the hall. There was food and wine there as well as more fantastic art. Some people are so talented. By then, it was almost 8:00. Ticket holders were on their way into the play and Bob and I were on our way to the coat check.
We went home chatting about the evening. It was an evening that ended up being almost 3 hours of pure entertainment, food and wine all for the wallet busting cost of $12. Not each but total. Yes, I think we’ll do that again. There are several more Marquee Friday Happy Hours planned in the upcoming months and we’ll be there for least one more. I suggest you do the same.
