Vapor of Smoke (part 3)

William headed south on Three-Notch road, and turned into the parking lot of a Baptist church. Sweet Moments General Baptist to be exact. The old building was gone, giving way to a new all metal beige one. William sat with the car running for a few moments to see if anyone was around. There wasnt much activity at 130 in the afternoon on a Tuesday. Off in the distance he could see the green of a John Deere tractor and the large dust cloud coming from behind it.
William got out of his car and dug his hand deep in his pocket. Hands that had used to be strong and powerful had now became weak and frail with time. He finally found what he was looking for, a small black box that said "Stanley and Sons Jewelry Store" on it.
With his hands trembling he opened the box to see the tiny diamond engagment ring. The day he had bought it was very cold. He had worked two jobs while going to college his first year. Emily had been a senior in high school. He had planned on giving it to her, at just the right moment. But that moment never came. She had already given her heart to someone else.
Okay he thought, as he looked around, it has to be here somewhere.
Over the years he had heard that she married, had three children. Two boys and a girl. Once he thought he had saw her in a resturant, but wasnt for sure. He kept the yearbook tucked away, hiden the back of his closet where she had written "I will love you forever."
He too had married, and it had been a good one, but the question still haunted him, What might have been?
Finally he found what he was looking for, as he made his way thru the maze of white stone and flowers. CLARK was what the headstone read. He bent down and placed the little black box on Emily's headstone and said softly, "I should have given this too you a long, long time ago."

Heart wrenching. So, is this a true story arguy? Or one you created?? Well written either way. I agree, Nicholas Sparks like. You could write a good novel arguy. Blue, that Walk to Remember was an incredible story. I rewatched the movie with my son a few months ago and rarely ever cry like that. Even though I'd already seen it once! Enjoyed several of his books. Nice blog as always arguy.

Some of the places are real, but none of the characters. I made it up as I went. Ive never read Nicholas Sparks, but I did catch the end of the notebook, on dvd. Thanks again for the support. Its what keeps me writing!

A real tear jerker. How often we second guess ourselves is a reality of everyday life. Especially those like me with the gray showing more every day.
