Welcome To Case's Column
Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken.
Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.
In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.![Stick Out Tongue](https://pics3.city-data.com/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif)
Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!
Regards,

Astros News: Could Springer Spring Forth Before His Time?
Posted 12-15-2012 at 06:04 AM by case44
The Houston Astros have a slew of fine minor league prospects that could be wearing a big league uniform within the next few years. They've got one hot prospect who happens to possess two very important things: solid defense in the outfield to go with a power-hitting bat. His name is George Springer, and he is an outfielder who was previously projected to arrive at the major league level in 2014.
Now, I've just read even more encouraging news. Look below.
Springer's skills spring to life early in career | astros.com: News
My, how things change. Springer has progressed faster than even prognosticators had thought. I'm more excited than ever that the Astros could get a lot stronger offensively than they were last season, and it could happen within one year. In their move to the American League, they now have at least three potential upgrades to their batting order, what with Springer, along with recent Rule 5 acquisition Nate Freiman and another Astros prospect, first baseman Jon Singleton. All three of them are reputed power hitters, so you can just imagine what would happen if all of them made the Astros final roster out of 2013 Spring Training.
Yes, we can imagine. And this is without the idea of having one-time Houston first baseman Lance Berkman coming into the picture (likely as a designated hitter and backup in the field), and that hasn't even been decided yet. But, yes, Astros fans have to be salivating over this.
Mmmm-mmm-mm!! If they all make it in March, oh, brother, we have the potential to tear up the AL. Yowza! Just stay tuned. February is around the corner.

They've got a slew of good prospects for the next few years. Should definitely be an interesting spring in Houston.

I tell you, Mal, it looks like Springer, Jon Singleton, and Jarred Cosart have the best chances to make the final roster out of spring training, but anything can still happen. Being that they are the strongest prospects in Houston's farm system, it will be exciting to see what they can bring to the 'Stros after successful runs in the minors. Cosart, by the way, could be tried as a closer out of the pen after first being considered for a starter.
