Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Case's Weight Management......Um, Roller Coaster

Do you think it's time for your favorite blogger to break his silence on something? Actually, it's really not that much of a secret, but it's also something I'd hate to admit. I can lie and say that I've got this great-looking, Fabio-haired, romance-novel body that would make many ladies' toes curl.

Well, I hope you like really short-cut, buzz-haired guys instead. I always thought women liked men with shorter hair and have been told that many times in the past. And I've delivered on that! But the romance-novel, chiseled look, well...........

Look, it's not that bad, folks. I've always sported a great physique and broad shoulders. And I'm also nearly six feet tall, if that means anything. What is getting in the way is my love for food and the accompanying lack of exercise through the years. Only in recent months have I seriously sought to do something about it. Now, I'm not going to pause from this personal quest of good journalism to shed tears; there's no time for that. There's an exercise bike that I really like, and its seat awaits my tookus at the nearby apartment complex workout room. I look forward to burning off a few calories hither and thether, but it requires a steady commitment each week. I can't be on again and off again, or else, 245 pounds becomes 260 and back down again. Obviously, I think you know where this is going. My goal is hit that bike at a minimum of four days a week. My diet doesn't have to really change, but I need to get the portions down. Sometimes on that front, I've succeeded, and other times, I haven't.

Off I go to the bike. Now that I've shared this life situation with you out there, I know that there are a few of you who are going to have the temptation to hold me accountable and to see how I'm doing. I'm all yours, and just wish me well.

Case, you are not alone in the diet and exercise regime gone astray. I can personally attest to my sporadic tendencies -- having dieted since I was FIVE.

If I can offer this from my lifetime of experiences in this regard?

Don't get hung up on a destination, but instead enjoy the journey. I find that life is more interesting if I am interested in all aspects of my life. If a stationary bike is the vehicle, then travel to distant places you've always wanted to go by taking along a travel book, or a National Geographic. Let your library give you options!

If you decided to incorporate diet changes, then experiment with food replacements rather than strictly cutting back. Example, if your primary protein is meat, see if you can replace some of the red with white, or fish, or beans. Play with new recipes, or new spices in old ones. When you reach a goal -- throw a party and invite people to share in your new adventures.

    Make it fun.

Oh, I have lots of different things to eat, LFM, but the important thing I must focus on is portion control. I do try to incorporate fish at least once a week. I also try to have at least one meal with green peppers. Something about green peppers keeps cancer and other problems away. My goal is to be on that bike no less than four days a week.

And, yes, I should make it fun!
