Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Another Interstate In Dallas? Never Say Never

Posted 10-11-2012 at 08:03 AM by case44

Since I'm a self-proclaimed Texas roads fanatic, I am often curious as to why certain places don't have certain types of corridors. In a previous post or three, I may have touched on a hint that there should be new corridors in West and Central Texas. But my attention, at this moment, is brought to a roadway that has existed for years as a loop, but still carries a state highway designation and is not signed as an interstate. So, I turn my attention to North Texas, where I live.

It's actually two different roads that could become one. What I'm referring to is the West Dallas-area combination of Loop 12 and Spur 408. Both freeways had been around for a significant amount of time, though Loop 12 had been built way back in the 1960s, and Spur 408 had come along in the early 1980s. Both of those highways should be at or near interstate grade, and there is talk of possibly rebuilding the Loop 12 freeway from Northwest Dallas into Irving. My point is this: I'd like to see both highways become the same road and receive an interstate designation. Why not? It would adequately complete the Dallas loop system with interstate-grade highway surrounding the entire city's center.

What I should do is write to my congressman to see if we could seek such a thing. It won't even cost a lot of money, as the roadways are essentially complete. All that's needed are new interchanges at State Highway 183 and Interstate 30 and some rebuilding of Loop 12's mainlanes through Irving, and that'd be it except for the new interstate signage. I suggest redesignating Loop 12 and Spur 408 as Interstate 235. It has a nice ring to it, it's a north-south thoroughfare, and it would connect with another interstate with 35 on the end of it. I don't see why not. Developers would salivate over this opportunity; however, most of Irving is already developed and nearly maxed out. Any new opportunities could take place south of I-30, and that area along the current Spur 408, done right, could become a gold mine with the I-235 designation. If you haven't seen that area, it's very scenic and reminds folks of the Texas Hill Country.

I-235. I like the sound of that.
