Weary Beyond Imagination

Posted 08-30-2012 at 02:01 PM by LookinForMayberry

Yesterday the hired laborer DH had arranged to come and help me in the yard did not show, so I was out there breaking up soil to remove weeds and grass roots for three hours. I was so tired I felt like crawling up the stairs. Since the guy was supposed to arrive at nine, Bigun did not get his walk, so you can imagine HIS energy level. Oh boy.

I think I came close to running out of hot water (from our 50 gallon tank) in an effort to ease my stiff, sore muscles and joints. Had I not been so hungry I probably would've napped right there on the bath mat, and then there was this little squirmy black dog.... "Can we, Mom, huh? Huh? Are you ready to go, NOW????"

Sigh. Is this how real mothers feel?

I dressed, grabbed a piece of cheese and a handful of cold grapes -- swallowed down a big glass of water. Deep breath. Okay, I can do this.

I found my keys, purse, and grabbed the lead, my hat, and clicked the remote to open the garage door. Bigun's ears flattened and he laid down at the top of the stairs. I slipped into my Keens and looked at him.

"The Car? Do we have to go in the CAR?" He wagged his tail just the tiniest bit. "You just need to throw something in the trunk, right, Mom?"

I clipped him on the lead and led him out the front door, leaving the chuck-it. A doggy mom can only do so much. He trotted along side, pulling back only when I opened the back door. A quick glance at my face must've let him know that it was this, or the sofa. He jumped in.

I stopped at the coffee kiosk on the way to Bothell, and called my friend to see if she wanted to join us. Missed her, again. I left a message. I parked in the shade downtown, and headed to the Sammamish Trail where it connects with the Landing on the Sammamish Slough. We headed west, back toward Kenmore, where the trail would be the shadiest. Though the forecast had been for a cool, overcast day, it was sunny and a warm 72F. Bigun forgot the car ride and trotted along side the trail, sniffing the grasses.

We walked just short of two hours. OMG. I felt like I was on my last steps as we headed back toward the car. Big' must've been tired, too, because he never once hesitated to leap in back.

As I started the car, my phone rang (through the radio), it was my friend that I'd been trying to connect with over the past two months.

"Hey," she says, "What are you doing?"
"Going home," I said. "I have to call you later."
Modern life.

DH tried arranging another laborer for today. Maybe I just wasn't meant to get help with this darned yard. He called just before he was due, letting us know he needed a ride.

A ride? Apparently that was a detail DH had not worked out.

"Nevermind," I said.
"I'll help," he said.

He dug holes to plant the siberian iris I pulled out yesterday. By the time I got them planted the sun was out -- what is it with the weather forecasts?! I doused them with water and called it quits.

Back to the shower, again. Today, no walk.

It's looking like a nice day to read on the sofa.
