Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

As If We Needed One More Reminder....

.....that you and I are not getting any younger. We're just not, folks. My body is not near as fast as it used to be. Or as agile. I may still be sexy at 46 (not to suggest that's real old), but it won't hold a candle to the inevitable "falling apart" syndrome that slowly besets me. As I look around me, guys and gals that "had it" when they were younger are still fogging as much as they can.

I tend to think of musical artists, actors, and actresses and how they've aged. Many ties to the past through the auspices of the people that supplied them have gotten really ---- dare I say ---- old. I'm not saying that's a bad thing; rather, they're still alive and still doing a lot of the things they used to do. Take Willie Nelson, for example. He's still performing at age 79, and one week after this blog gets written, he's going to help throw a party for the new KOKE-FM in Austin through a concert he's putting on.

Here is a list of other names that come to my mind:

Mick Jagger, age 69. He's still got The Rolling Stones going. It wasn't long ago that he hosted the most recent season finale of "Saturday Night Live" back in May.

Tom Jones, age 73. There was a time when he had that soulful, electric energy in his performances. And he wowed those chicks, too. Although he still performs these days, he can't hit those high notes like he once did.

Barbara Eden, age 77. She once starred in the NBC-TV comedy, "I Dream Of Jeannie" in the 1960s, but had been acting and singing for a good many years. Her work actually took her into this last decade, doing cable movies and doing some theater.

Gordon Lightfoot, age 73. This guy brought country, pop, and folk together. Can you believe that he is still performing sixty dates a year? He just isn't recording these days, but, boy, what a great contribution he has made to the music field, particularly in the '60s and '70s.

John Travolta, age 58. Okay, he's not 60 yet, but when you think what we've lost this year since ABC's "Welcome Back, Kotter" left the air many test patterns ago, you can be glad that he's still going. You'd think that the former Vinnie Barbarino may well be preparing for that class reunion which would have been attended by Juan Epstein (Robert Hegyes) and Arnold Horshack (Ron Palillo). Hegyes and Palillo both passed away this year. Now, with John, let's not forget his other works, including "Saturday Night Fever".

Sonny James, age 83. He was the country singer known as "The Southern Gentleman". Largely successful in his trade, he had a string of top hit songs in the '60s and '70s. In 1983, he retired from the music scene and moved home to Alabama, where he continues his refuge. He's doing just fine, thank you.

Linda Gray, age 71. Hard to believe she's that far (I actually thought she was a little younger), but, man, where has the time gone? She gets to be Sue Ellen Ewing not once, but twice. Currently, Linda is starring in the new "Dallas" series for the next generation. Still looks pretty dang good.

~Sigh~ I could go on and on, but you get where I'm coming from right now. We're all getting one more second older, and there's no helping it by any means, but there are times where we wish everyone we idolize or observe or keep company would just be twenty to thirty years younger once again.

Makes me want to go out and.............write a western movie script.....
