Vapor of Smoke (part 2)

Posted 07-10-2008 at 07:05 AM by arguy1973

With a big lump in his throat, William walked back to his car. He started the ignition and knew that he shouldnt but felt the need to drive by where she used to live. New houses lined what used to be a large bean field on the road that led up to her house, and the road had finally been paved. The fence was new, but the property lines still looked the same, as he pulled in front of an old grown up house. It looked as if no one had lived there in many years. The screen door was laying on the porch and several windows were broken or taped up. He remembered the last time he was here. It had been in May, and he could still see her dad telling him to respect his daughters wishes, as he had walked away with tears in his eyes. She had told him she needed time...something he said he didnt have then. It was all he had now, but now it was time spent in the past.
He looked over toward where the barn used to be and in between the broken boards of the porch he saw the old porch light, and smiled when he thought of how Emily's mother used to flick it on and off at them if she didnt hurry up and come in when he brought her home.
The sound of a car door slamming brought his attention back suddenly as he saw a green car had pulled up behind his. As he got closer a man had gotten out, he asked William, "can I help you sir?" William replied, "I used to know someone that lived here..a long time ago."
The man said, "My great-grandparents used to live here and my grandmother." William knew that this must be Emilys grandson, and to him he wasnt anyone. William told him thanks for letting him look around and he got back in his car, he had one final stop to make, a few miles outside of town.
