Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

I-69 Texas Update: New Plans For East Texas

A few moons back yonder, you may recall seeing a blog post I cooked up about a national interstate highway that is seeing new real estate as it extends southward beyond its former southern terminus in Indianapolis. And that terminus happens to be ancient history, as a few new things have since happened.

Interstate 69, as I've shared here, now has six miles of roadway in South Texas, with more to come. Indianapolis is now in the rear-view mirror, as I-69 now covers stretches of Memphis, Tennessee, and portions of central Kentucky and northern Mississippi. It's expected that the Houston area stretch of U.S. Highway 59 will be converted to I-69 before the year is done, but no official date has been set. Still, when it finally does happen, it'll be a huge step in the right direction. But there's more news about the roadway. Word out of Nacogdoches and Lufkin is that $18 million has been set aside to plan and develop the portion of the interstate that will eventually run through that part of Texas. Plans will be laid out for bypasses around the aforementioned communities. At least, the encouraging thing is, some real initiative is being taken now. Environmental studies and clearances still have to take place, but routes have been identified in both locations. The fun part is seeing how it will all come into place.

Keep in mind that this new stretch of I-69 will not happen overnight, but at least, Texans can be hopeful that this new road just might get built in our lifetimes..............one mile marker at a time.

It's nice to see that they're pushing forward with this. Some towns in East Texas have actually been denied new business from prospective companies simply because the interstate isn't there.

Been in the Houston area the last few days, and have checked out the new stretch of freeway in Shepherd, TX. I-69 has already become law in northeast Houston, from Loop 610 to Splendora on U.S. 59. The signs are not yet up (except for control signs on overhead gantries), but they will be within a few months.

Under review now are two more stretches of U.S. 59 in the Houston area. Southwest of Loop 610 to Rosenberg will be the next to receive the designation to interstate status. Inside the loop will probably be another year from now or less. I'm about to go look at the road work between Rosenberg and El Campo.

It's also expected that a stretch in Texarkana will receive interstate designation soon. I'll be interested in seeing what number they give it (it cannot be 69, but possibly I-X69).
