Finding a House on Long Island

Posted 06-20-2012 at 12:31 PM by James1202

We bought our home because it met most of the criteria we set for our search. I don't remember all but the things that come to mind include:

1) along the Suffolk side of the Nassau-Suffolk Co. border
2) a small, unimproved, older home that needed some or a lot of work;
3) on half an acre or more;
4) easy to maintain parcel (no retaining walls, drainage problems, etc.)
5) north of the Long Island Expressway (I-495, "LIE");
6) in an area with hills and mature trees;
7) not on a main road but also not far from one;
8) close to Lowe's or Home Depot, library, post office, drug store, grocery store, gas stations, etc.
9) south of 25A (for the most part);
10) pre-WWII construction

What other criteria there might have been I don't recall at the moment.

We knew we wanted to take whatever we found and turn it into a convincingly authentic Queen Anne Victorian. Which is something we couldn't find for sale in the price range or an area we could accept.

Despite a long history of European settlement and activity Long Island doesn't have many homes, pre-WWII, for sale at any given time.
