Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

The Misadventures Of A Courier Dispatcher

It's pretty incredible that each work day brings a sense of not knowing what's going to happen next, good or bad. Such is the case in life, anyway, but you never know what surprises await when laboring for eight to ten hours a day. Stuff of life happens. That's right. Especially in my place of business and busyness.

When I'm not at home producing computer chickenscratch for all the world to see, I'm working at another computer at my office. I work as a courier dispatcher for a large business and have for years. The stories people share about others during these work experiences might amaze you. Our objective is simply to get deadlines made on shipments going from warehouses to businesses or residences. Sometimes, we have to ship packages on airplanes. There is a fleet of drivers who are given assignments (if they choose to) and take to the task of getting same done on time to please a broad customer base. On some occasions, mistakes get made, either on the part of the customer, the dispatcher, an airline, or the driver. Reasons and excuses start flying like mosquitoes. When a driver proceeds to do wrong or do things just to tee off a dispatcher, it's best for the dispatcher to keep his/her guard up. Still, there's the temptation for me to say things like, "No deadline, no money," or, "You've got two hands, two legs, a shipment, a vehicle, and a brain. What's the problem?" Or, perhaps, "At least, go rent a watch...," (No joke; some drivers don't wear watches, and don't ask me why) or, "If you blow this deadline, I'll flick a booger on your windshield," or, "Do I need to go over there and show you how to deliver a package?"

Different people just happen to approach things on different levels, so long as the objective remains the same. You have adventures, and then you have misadventures. I have to deal with folks that get it and folks that don't. If you could just be with me and watch and listen to the occasional craziness that happens at work, you could probably write a book. And in spite of life's big and little idiosyncracies, I still love my job, giving people a reason to get up each day.

Boys will be boys, girls will be girls, men will be men, women will be women, and, yes, work will still be work.
