A Powerful Friend
(Christ is speaking to people in the province of Galilee in the old region of Palestine. In those days Palestine was divided into three provinces, Judea, Samaria and Galilee. Galilee was the scene of some of the most memorable events of Jewish history.) Matthew 11:28-29 -"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Christ makes some pretty tall claims here, and in his day people asked him who he thought he was saying things like this. He even had the nerve to challenge the religious leaders of his day because they were not teaching God's word. Where did he get the power and authority to do these things and more? We are told in John 1:18 in the NIV translation of the Bible - No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known. He brought the power and authority with him from Heaven where he lived with his father before coming here. Saving us from our sins so we could have eternal life was his greatest display of power and authority for us. Because of his sacrifice on the cross we can go directly to God and ask for his forgiveness or just talk to him, in the name of his son Jesus, who anyone can regard as a powerful friend.
