Three Women and a Shiraz

Posted 05-26-2012 at 08:55 AM by KatieGal

Since this is an internet blog and hopefully no one knows who I am, I will revisit yesterday evening when three women talked about s-e-x. For reasons I cannot explain, I feel the need to chronicle the night and I might as well do it now, first thing in the morning. Forgive me if I have a few misspellings or a neglected comma. I haven’t had my coffee yet and I’m still a bit foggy-headed from last evening.

I’m a movie buff. I’m perfectly willing to spend an evening alone on the sofa with a bowl of popcorn, a bottle of red wine, and a good movie. But early this past week I decided I’d like to have some company, so I asked a couple of my lady friends over for a Friday night of popcorn, wine, and a movie. Both girls, Becky and Vicki, are around 30, give or take, and both are currently single. Becky is on the quiet side whereas Vicki is a little more outgoing. Becky lives in my apartment building, and Vicki is a coworker. Vicki and I go out to lunch a couple days a week. I think it was Vicki who first suggested OKCupid to me, the dating website I have referred to in a previous blog entry.

I had several movies on hand for us to choose from but the movie we decided to watch was Friends With Benefits. None of us had seen it. Anyway, we were about five minutes into the film, and about a glass of wine apiece, when Vicki spontaneously announced that Jim Caviezel is “hotter” than Justin Timberlake, the star of the movie we were watching. Only Vicki knew who Jim Caviezel was, so a pause in the movie was required.

One thing led to another and a few minutes, and another glass of wine later, we were talking about sex, and our opinions thereof. Vicki took the stage first, of course, and she readily admitted that she likes sex. I was not wildly surprised. In fact, she claimed that she enjoys the very basics of sex to the point where a lot of foreplay is often not required. But as she stated very succinctly, that doesn’t mean the operation should go quickly and take little time. However when asked, Vicki insisted that she is usually not the initiator and that she prefers it that way.

Next, our eyes went to Becky. Even two glasses of wine were not quite enough. She had to be coaxed. But eventually Becky said, somewhat sheepishly, that she actually does not care one way or the other about the actual sex act. What she likes is to be held, kissed, and nuzzled. If sex has to be part of that, then Becky is good with it. “I don’t dislike sex,” she said several times. Apparently it is the simple intimacy that makes Becky’s heart beat.

Fortunately by the time it was my turn I already had had three glasses of Shiraz and was working on my fourth. Thank god I was not driving. Of course I'm paying for it as I type these words.

I stated that I liked sex but I liked the intimacy of it too. I think I stammered out that I enjoyed the “whole damn package”, words I undoubtedly would not have chosen if I were completely sober. When I was asked if I achieve orgasm, three and a half glasses of wine were barely sufficient to bring out the truth. I finally relented and admitted that it was about a 50/50 proposition for me, generally speaking. I elaborated, stating that when the relationship is new, but not so new that I’m still nervous and self-conscious, I run at 100% satisfaction, provided my partner is attentive and patient. That’s when pure sex is at its best, I proclaimed, a tiny bit drunkenly. “Yep, during that period in a relationship, the fireworks always end in with a grand finale,” a slightly slurred metaphor that cracked-up the girls.

There we were, three women, and three different appreciations and opinions of sex. I should mention that there was more to our discussion than what I have submitted. I left out some things, things such as preferred positions, recounting of each of our respective “first time”, even our individual thoughts concerning men’s body hair. And of course our conversation often got sidetracked, and interrupted by fits of laughter. Needless to say, we never saw the movie. Maybe we’ll get together again and actually make a point of seeing it.

By the way, we ran an internet search on “Jim Caviezel”. He’s in the TV series Persons of Interest. Personally, when it comes to actors, I prefer Viggo Mortensen, but that’s only because Paul Newman is gone. As always, I’m a traditionalist to the core. Now, off to get that coffee.
