Welcome To Case's Column
Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken.
Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.
In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.![Stick Out Tongue](https://pics3.city-data.com/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif)
Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!
Regards,

Dallas Radio News Just Got Quite A Bit More Interesting
Posted 04-18-2012 at 07:30 PM by case44
As much as I've barked about radio making too much change, and not for the better, I've noticed something new on the Big D landscape. My longtime hometown just saw a drastic change on the AM dial, and one that this writer certainly didn't come close to expecting.
For the past twenty years, the main competition for news and talk in the Dallas-Fort Worth area had been AM stations KRLD (1080) and WBAP (820), and it was an intense battle for listeners. Still is, and for the benefit of everyone in the listening area or online. Now, another player who has also been an important part of the Metroplex radio landscape is getting more serious about competing with the aforementioned channels for which this one had been long basking in the shadows. That station is KLIF-AM (570). For that same amount of time that KRLD and WBAP had been competing heavily, KLIF had endured some success as a good local talk station. Then they would subtract the local product for more syndicated fare after a period where, I thought, they carved a good local niche. They had people who were popular locally. But they rode the tide of corporate radio and things changed too quickly.
So, now, what does KLIF do? They've gone into the news business.![EEK!](https://pics3.city-data.com/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif)
Ahhh, KLIF. Those of you that go wayyyyy back may remember what made this a legendary station. They've had Gordon McLendon, Top 40, country, talk, and now......
After listening to their product, it wasn't half bad at all, and a very interesting listen during the first day that I heard it. They now do news hours in the weekday mornings and afternoons, with local updates elsewhere at 3 past the hour. On weekends, there is no local news, but I believe I did hear a traffic and weather update at the top of the hour. I get the feeling that there may be more to come. The catch, however, is this: WBAP and KLIF are now sister stations owned by Cumulus, and they share reporters and a few anchors. Great. Just what we need, more radio consolidation.
Actually, the two stations still have different personalities, so there won't be that much in the way of sameness. Still, however, the same field reports you hear on WBAP.................can also be heard on KLIF! ![Smack](https://pics3.city-data.com/forum/images/smilies/smack.gif)
Ahhhhh, radio. One good thing about this arrangement is that it does give D/FW more news to listen to while on the road. Perhaps it would have been more interesting if KLIF had a totally different crop of reporters forming a semi-all-news outlet. In this day and age, it isn't likely to happen. Which goes to show you that anything is better than nothing.
