Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Flashing Yellow Before Our Eyes In Frisco

You may have heard about a new phenomenon that is sweeping across the country regarding traffic safety improvement. Stale, solid green on a traffic signal for many years meant yielding to oncoming cars when making a left turn at an intersection. Through the years, however, more and more accidents have been occurring.

So, the Federal Highway Administration did something about it: The stale, solid green ball is gone, and flashing yellow arrow is now in. That's right, flashing. This is now the coming thing. I have seen this display, so far, in three significant places in Texas (Irving, Carrollton, and Tyler). A city which I frequent is going to be next. Frisco, Texas, come on down; you're the next contestant to receive the new flashing yellow arrow. It's actually a very good idea and I believe people will adjust to it, and they certainly will heed this better than they did the stale green. Flashing yellow instantly beckons drivers to slow down, so the arrow concept will accomplish same for future road warriors, errand runners, and travelers. In Frisco, for example, four intersections are slated to receive the new FYA display. Four others will be on tap next month, and that pace will continue new each month until 80 Frisco intersections are covered. Any new Frisco signals proposed or yet to be built will also receive it, as well.

I should expect other Texas cities and towns to eventually follow suit, and it will take a while. The big cities such as Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, and Lubbock will catch on, and it will be a long process. From what I've read, San Antonio is already implementing said plan at some intersections there. Stale green grown stale?? Perhaps. But if this act saves more lives, then let's get going with it.

I've seen a few of those yellow arrows around in some places, Case. Hard to believe they're doing away with the solid green. I can't believe that people had such a difficult time understanding it that a drastic change has to be made.

Well, mal, never mind that we've become a dumbed-down society (and ignorant). The FHWA had a new idea and I think this concept will do a lot better than the before, since yellow does mean "caution", as opposed to green usually meaning "go."
