Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Spring Has A Way Of Expressing Itself, And Not Always So Gracefully

With spring, you take the good with the bad. Look, I like thunderstorms when I'm at my abode and my car underneath the awning, but that was not the scenario that took place Tuesday on the stage known as life. Yesterday, I was at work, and I came out of a meeting earlier than expected. When I got back to my work station, the skies outside my window were dark. I looked at the computer for the National Weather Service website. Radars were busy with intense shower activity and the advisory with these words:

TWO TORNADOES ON THE GROUND IN THE D/FW AREA.

That was enough to get the co-workers, myself, and others prepared for the situation at hand, which was a band of intense thunderstorms, rain, and, of all things, hail. Area-wide, we had at least eight tornadoes that were spotted on the ground at various times during the afternoon on Tuesday. One funnel was visible near Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport,.................just a mere few miles from my place of business.

We took shelter immediately at our office and decided on taking refuge in a training room. Since it wasn't near any windows, it made the most sense. Then we heard the hail overhead, getting louder and louder, and then coming to a decrescendo. The rain then settled down to a near silence. I dreaded what I would face, as did others in my office, when we'd all go out to our cars and survey whatever it was we would face. You wouldn't have wanted to see that parking lot yesterday afternoon. It resembled a war zone. Cars were damaged one way or another, with some people's windshields completely shattered. My car had its sun roof practically obliterated, and there were curved cracks trailing down from the top of my front windshield down to the lower left corner. Dents were everywhere on the car's body. The back windshield, however, never got touched. It looked as pristine as ever.

As I looked at the newspaper today, some people in some Metroplex cities and burbs lost more than their cars. There were damaged houses and businesses. Even some 18-wheeler trailers --- get this --- were tossed around in the fierce tornado winds, and, of course, getting damaged. Incredibly, out of all of this, no lives lost at this writing.

Thankfully, I'm still alive. So is everybody in the Dallas-Fort Worth area on this very day. No deaths (to this point) have been reported. While my Toyota will have to face a good repair shop and get some major surgery (plastic surgery?), I can just settle for a rental. This thing called life is so complex and so strange at times.

Kind of like our tricky Texas weather, in many ways.
