Vapor of smoke (Part 1)
The old man made a right on school street. It had been almost 50 years since he had been down the street but it seemed just like yesterday. He drove in front of the High School, the building was different but the same steps and driveway leading to it reminded him of a time that had seemed to pass so slowly but so fast at the same time. He continued on past the high school, thinking the whole time..He could smell the honeysuckle, he could almost see the other guys that had been on his basketball team. They had run this road everyday at 210, always hoping that some girl would sneak a peak out the window. But not William, no he had made up his mind, Emily was the love of his life. He had been 17 and she was 16, he thought as he turned around and headed back toward the school. As he got closer to the school he heard the sound of thunder and it reminded him of how Emily would wait after school for him, and they would kiss under the awning of the gym, until a teacher or another student would happen by. He could almost smell the popcorn and see the cars and trucks lined up at the last home ballgame and he made another pass in front of the school..What had happened? Why after all these years could he not forget?
As William pulled into the gravel parking lot beside the baseball field, he got out and walked over to the big oaks that lined the school yard. It was here that Emily had first told him that she loved him. He had hugged her and told her that he loved her too. His hands were trembling as he sit down at the park bench outside and a tear fell from his eyes. Was he remembering things the way that they happened or the way he had had pictured them in his dreams??
